Sound Culture Audio Lab

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The Sound Culture Audio Laboratory is a professional residential symposium for practitioners and theorists in the Sonic Arts and Sound Design fields. The Laboratory will feature peer to peer workshops, seminars and performances and will foster an informal but informative atmosphere, maximising dialogue and exchange.

The Laboratory will focus on the theme of Sound and the Environment and examine issues of location and locatedness; sonic immersion; spatial and geo-spatially located audio; approaches to acoustic ecology; the relationship of the body to sound and spatial memory; the relationship of natural and cultural soundscapes with acoustic patrimony; and relationship of physical sites to oral histories.

Fader is a new installation-based work by Ryszard Dabek which that has arisen from time spent in Europe during 2007. It consists of a series of large archival inkjet prints, a looping video and a low level sound work. It is part of a broader project that concerns itself with an investigation and re-versioning of 20th Century utopian aesthetics as manifest in specific architectural spaces. These spaces range from the starkly utilitarian to the overtly monumental.

The work in Fader draws upon the abandoned utopian architectural projects of Mid 20th Century Warsaw while engaging the material detritus of the era. It proposes a fractured dialogue of sorts, between the short-lived aesthetic dictums of socialist realism and the formalist approaches that followed in its wake. Far from the gleaming surfaces of historically sanctioned “Modernity”, a confused and compromised model is brought into play.

Fader opens on Tuesday 5 August, 6 - 8pm, in the Sydney College of the Arts Galleries, and continues until Saturday 30 August.
Gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday 11am - 5pm, Saturday 11am - 4pm

The Sound of Failure 2008
Sound art festival
Following on from the (ironic) success of last year’s festival, Sound of Failure 2008 brings together over forty local and international sound artists in numerous venues to surprise, shock and entertain. Many of these artists have attempted to transcend the small rectangular screens and the latest Microsoft releases, opting instead to look at unintended consequences of technology – when it misbehaves or just gives up the ghost.
Internationally renowned torturers of electronic toys, Toydeath, will unleash their circuit bent mayhem on the Factory Theatre along with 15 other acts (Book NOW: Exhibition wise, Chrissie Cotter gallery in Camperdown will host a diverse range of audio, and audio-visual installations from over a dozen artists.
