SONO-PERCEPTION PIONEERING PSYCHOACOUSTIC SONIC ART

June 16th, 2008

From JOLT ARTS INC. AND CARRIAGEWORKS

Prepare to be vibrated… SONO PERCEPTION is a one-off performance at CarriageWorks from JOLT arts. A collaborative concert showcasing Australia’s leading and emerging sonic artists blurring the boundaries between sound, music and noise. SONO PERCEPTION artists incorporate precocious computer programs, re-imagined Percy Grainger machines and the occasional kooky robot!

It’s hypnotic, evocative, bizarre and unlike anything you’ve heard before.
Sydney’s newest contemporary arts centre, CarriageWorks is proud to partner Melbourne-based JOLT arts in introducing this highly innovative program to the Sydney music scene.

‘Wonderfully post apocalyptic’ – The Age, June 2007

The program for SONO PERCEPTION includes:
Married sound-art gurus, Warren Burt and Catherine Schieve make music together through their reproduction of Percy Grainger’s 1930’s ‘Electric Eye Tool’. Schieve’s large scale drawings, inspired by the natural environment, are scanned by the machine and interpreted into sound.

James Hullick brings to life his work Wood, Metal, Gut and Hair. Violin playing robots cluster together, creating a large, spider-like machine. Demonstrating points of audible contact – hitting, scratching and scraping - Hullick’s invention is as noisy as it is kooky.

Speak Percussion’s Peter Neville, performs the work of American 20th century compositional giant James Tenney. Requiring seamless unbounded skill and precision, this is one man, one gong and ten minutes of spellbinding zen-like captivation.

Bruce Mowson’s audio visual experience in full quadraphonic surround sound explores the raw, minimalist elements of sound. A mirage of pure colour shapes are manipulated by sliding sine tones to create a meditative cocoon.
