The Megaphone Project selected for APAM
February 26th, 2008
Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey, and their Megaphone Project has been selected to participate in the 2008 Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) in February. More than 150 leading international and 250 Australian presenters, producers and promoters are expected to attend APAM, the largest performing arts market in the southern hemisphere. The eighth biennial APAM will be held in Adelaide from 25 to 29 February 2008 in conjunction with the Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts.
Flynn and Humphrey are also ANAT Synapse residency recipients at the Garvan Institute, and The Megaphone Project is part of of this sound design residency. The megaphone project is a multi-layered installed and performed work that uses strong visual sculptural symbols to facilitate interaction between listening and sound creation. 24 red horns (megaphones) of varying sizes and on stands create a striking field within any existing landscape. On this level, the work is a sculptural installation.
The megaphones have embedded circuits in the base that are wirelessly linked to each other and coordinated through a custom software environment that records and plays back captured material. The attendant sound is an element that interacts with their visual placement. Wider spacing creates change within the required audio architecture and vice versa. On this level, the work is a sound work, with many possible diffusive variations.
